Generic settings
FiO2 100%
Mode ACV or SIMV
Rate 10 bpm (titrate to goal)
Tidal volume (8-10 mL/kg IBW)
PEEP 5
PS 10
Adjusting settings
If PaO2 is too low, increase PEEP
If PaCO2 is too low, decrease rate
Positive End-Expiratory Pressure (PEEP)
Major function is to increase the mean airway pressure
Increases oxygenation (in most patients) by:
Improving atelectasis
Decreasing shunt
Increasing Functional Residual Capacity (FRC)
Has negative consequences
Can decrease blood pressure (decr CO)
Can worsen dead space (incr PaCO2)
