Celiac disease, serological markers
Posted by dkwinter

Note: the diagnosis of celiac disease is a risk factor for nutritional deficiency and complications of the disease. It also has important implications for family members who may be at risk for celiac or related diseases. On the other hand, risks and complications of non-celiac gluten sensitivity are less well defined.

Screening individuals >= 2 y/o:

  • IgA anti-tissue transglutaminase (IgA tTG)
    • If low and high probability of the disease then check total serum IgA for deficiency
  • IgA endomysial antibody (IgA EMA)
  • NOTE: levels may fall with treatment and can be used to monitor response to gluten-free diet
