There are multiple known modifiable risk factors associated with developing dementia including high body mass index, smoking, poor diet, and low physical activity.
This 2022 study with a massive sample size of 466,788 individuals and 9.1 year mean follow-up time shows that having higher grip strength was associated with a lower risk of developing dementia. This finding held up even after correcting for lifestyle and sociodemographic factors.
In this context, grip strength can be seen as a proxy for overall physical strength and this should be one extra piece of encouragement to do some strengthening (resistance) exercises daily.
