Note: menopausal transition before age 40 is premature ovarian failure
Early menopausal transition
- 7 to 60 day difference consecutive cycle length
- duration variable, usually starts about 4 years prior to FMP
- variable increase in FSH
- vasomotor symptoms not characteristic
Late menopausal transition
- >= 60 day intervals of amenorrhea
- duration 1-3 years
- FSH > 25 IU/L on cycle days 2 to 5
- Vasomotor symptoms likely
Postmenopause
- amenorrhea
- duration of remaining lifespan
- variable increase in FSH, which then stabilizes
- vasomotor symptoms more likely
- late postmenopause period (6 years after FMP) characterized by increasing symptoms of urogenital atrophy
